Meet our Co-Owner Orthodontist

It’s hard to believe I’ve been providing orthodontic care for our patients for 20 years! I feel very fortunate to care for our patients in the beautiful North Bay, where I was born and raised.

For undergraduate studies, I attended the University of Colorado Boulder (Go Buffs!) and majored in Biology. After Boulder, I earned my Doctor of Dental Surgery degree in 2003 from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry in San Francisco, where I also taught Invisalign part-time to dental students. My Orthodontic Residency was completed in 2006 at the University of California, Los Angeles (Go Bruins!), where I served as Chief Resident. During my residency, I simultaneously earned a Master of Science degree, and my research focused on the orthodontic treatment of patients with cleft palate. After residency, I joined my Father, Dr Tom Bales, in our family Orthodontic practice in both Novato and Santa Rosa, which he started in 1976 (50 years ago!). I worked as his associate for five years and then purchased the practice in 2011 before his retirement. Dr Katie King joined our practice as an Associate in 2021, and in 2025, we became business partners. Our motto is, “Two Katie’s are better than one!”

For the past twenty years, I have remained an active member of the American Association of Orthodontists, the American Dental Association, the California Dental Association, the Pacific Coast Society of Orthodontics, and our local dental societies in Marin and Sonoma Counties. I am proud to have served as the Past President of both the Sonoma County Dental Society and the California Association of Orthodontists. I recently completed my term as Director for the California chapter of the Pacific Coast Orthodontic Society Board. In addition, I am a fellow of the International College of Dentists and the American College of Dentists, and I hold the distinction of being a Board-Certified Orthodontist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics.

All that said, my proudest achievement is my family. My husband and I have three sweet daughters and a pup. We enjoy traveling, skiing, hiking, coaching, and watching our girls play sports, volunteering in our community, and spending time with our family and friends.
